Doris Kenner

Doris Kenner, known professionally as Doris Troy, was an American singer-songwriter born on January 6, 1937, in The Bronx, New York. She was predominantly associated with the genres of soul, R&B, and gospel. Troy gained significant recognition in the 1960s, particularly for her hit single "Just One Look," which became a classic and has been covered by numerous artists, including The Hollies and The Beatles. Troy's career began in the gospel music scene, and she later moved into secular music, working with notable figures such as Phil Spector, who produced her self-titled album "Doris Troy" in 1965. Her distinctive voice and emotive delivery helped bridge the gap between gospel and popular music, influencing the sound of soul music during that era. In addition to her work as a performer, Troy was also a talented songwriter, contributing to songs for other artists, including "Ain't That Lovin' You," which showcased her songwriting prowess. Her impact on music is notable in how she helped pave the way for female artists in soul and R&B, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire musicians today. Doris Troy passed away on February 16, 2004, but her contributions to music remain celebrated.
